Since embarking on this natural hair journey, I am trying to do my best not to become a product junkie. Now that natural hair is popular, everybody and their momma has started a hair care line for natural hair. Quite a few of these products cost an arm and a leg. I don't mind trying new products every now and then but I try not to do that until I'm out of something and I need a replacement. Though, some of these products I don't really see myself buying because I think their prices are too high.
While some companies pride themselves on using natural ingredients, other companies use products I cannot even pronounce. However, there is a way to get around both situations: go to the grocery or health store. That's right, some of the same stuff you feed your stomach is good enough for your hair. Here are some of things I currently use on my hair that is 100% edible:
|
Water |
I love to moisturize my hair with water. To me, it makes sense. As long as the water bill is paid I don't have to go to the store to get some. Depending on the spray bottle, I can saturate my whole head or spray a slight mist on my hair. Every now and then I will use a water based hair moisturizer from the store. However, I find myself reaching for water more.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil |
I like to use Extra Virgin Olive Oil to seal in the moisture in my hair. It give my hair a nice sheen. I pour the oil in a smaller bottle with a nozzle on it. I also put some in a spray bottle. However, I must admit both methods can get a little messy. It only takes a little to do a lot.

Coconut Oil |
To get around the messiness of the olive oil, sometimes I will seal in the moisture with coconut oil. I like using coconut oil because, like the olive oil it gives my hair a nice sheen. However, if I keep the coconut oil in the refrigerator, it will stay in a solid state. When you put it in your hands it will melt slowly from your body heat, giving you time to apply it without it getting messy. If you wanted to use it in a liquid form, all you have to do is let it sit at room temperature.

Flax Seeds |
I use flax seeds to make a gel. I use this gel a lot when I do twistouts. This gel has a slimy composure to it so don't wear the clothes you are going out in when using it. However, doesn't take a lot of seeds to make the gel. When I purchased the seeds, I got a lot for my money. Unless you add a preservative to it, you MUST keep it in the refrigerator. It will stay good for a couple of weeks. To see a tutorial of how I make the flaxseed gel, click

I have heard of other edible hair care methods but have not gotten around to trying them yet. What are some of your favorite edible hair care tips? Let me know in the comments section.
Yours truly,
Coily
